The day your braces come off or you finish your last aligner is a milestone — but it isn't the finish line. Teeth have memory, and without a retainer they will slowly drift back toward where they started. Retainer wear is the single most important thing you can do to protect your investment.
Why teeth shift after treatment
The ligaments and bone around your teeth need time to stabilize in their new positions — that remodeling takes months. And even after things settle, teeth keep responding to everyday forces from chewing, clenching, and natural aging for the rest of your life. That's why orthodontists now consider retention a lifelong habit, not a short phase.
A typical wear schedule
- The first monthsMost patients wear their retainer full-time (except eating and brushing) right after treatment, while everything stabilizes. Follow the exact schedule we give you.
- Transitioning to nightsOnce we confirm things are stable, most patients move to nighttime-only wear.
- Nights for lifeLong-term, a few nights a week is the simplest insurance policy in dentistry. A good rule: wear it as many nights as it takes for it to feel effortless to put in. If it ever feels tight, wear it more.
Tight retainer? That's your cue.
A retainer that feels snug means your teeth have started to drift. Wear it nightly until it feels passive again. A retainer that won't seat at all means it's time to call us — don't force it.
Caring for your retainer
- Rinse it with cool water every time you take it out, and brush it gently with a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste — it's abrasive) once a day.
- Soak it in a retainer cleaner or denture tablet solution once or twice a week.
- Heat warps plastic: keep it away from hot water, car dashboards, and dishwashers.
- When it's not in your mouth, it lives in its case — pockets and napkins are where retainers go to disappear.
- Keep it away from pets. Dogs find retainers irresistible.
